This, combined with an advanced MicroPiezo AMC™ print head, enables the Pro 3880 to produce gallery-quality color and black-and-white output up to 17" x 22". The compact, 17" wide printer includes Epson UltraChrome® K3 with Vivid Magenta Ink Technology, world-renowned for professional printing applications. With the Epson Stylus Pro 3880, uncompromising quality is within reach. Your creative visions can be realized with the Epson Stylus Pro 3880 In fact, there's so much innovation in this feature-rich printer, you might expect a much larger footprint, but the Epson Stylus Pro 3880 is remarkably compact, equal in size to many 13-inch printers. Engineered for the most discriminating professionals, it comes with a variety of technological breakthroughs that will make it the benchmark by which all other 17-inch printers are measured. It's a good choice not only for professionals, but also as a bridge for serious amateurs who are thinking of making photography their life's work.Ĭheck out the test scores for the Epson Stylus Pro 3880.With the introduction of the Epson Stylus Pro 3880, the bar has once again been raised and the realm of what's possible expanded. The Epson Stylus Photo R3000 still reigns as the "prosumer" Editors' Choice for serious amateurs and professionals on a budget, but those willing to step beyond that, creatively and/or professionally, would do well to take a close look at the 3880. We haven't tested a printer in the 3880's class in a long time, but its output quality pegged it as worthy of an Editors' Choice as a C-size professional photo printer. (Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to test it on 17- by 24-inch paper.) On that paper, the 3880 produced many exquisite, gallery-worthy 13- by-19 prints in my tests. Prints on Epson's Velvet Fine Art Paper, a professional-grade matte paper, showed no banding at all. The only flaw worth mention that I noted in my photo testing was a slight trace of banding-in this case a regular pattern of very fine hatching-seen in solid black areas in two prints on glossy paper.

Graphics were also very good mild smudging in one image and a slight registration (alignment) issue in another were the two problems I noted, but they were only noticeable on very close examination. Using the 3880 to print text would be like using a Maserati to drive to the mall, but its text quality was very good for an inkjet, good enough for documents like resumes that are meant to impress, at least with fairly standard typefaces. The Canon Pixma Pro9500 Mark II ($849.99 direct, 4 stars), which prints photos up to 13 by 19 inches, took an average of 2 minutes 35 seconds per 4-by-6 print. Print Speed and Output Quality The 3880 averaged 1 minute 17 seconds to print out a 4-by-6 photo at default settings, not as fast as the R3000, which averaged 53 seconds but still a respectable score.

I tested it over an Ethernet connection with a PC running Windows Vista.

The 3880 offers Ethernet and USB connectivity. (You do expend some ink in making the switch, so you should change paper types sparingly.) There's no good way to measure the cost per printed page for a printer like this, but the ink cost-at 75c per ml-is less than with the smaller cartridges used by smaller-format Epson near-dedicated photo printers. It can only use 8 ink tanks at a time, switching between the photo black and matte black depending on the paper type. The 3880 packs 9 ink tanks, each of 80ml capacity: photo black, matte black, light black, light light black, yellow, vivid magenta, vivid light magenta, cyan, and light cyan.
